Per NFPA 20, a completed fire pump installation requires field acceptance testing to verify the correctness of the installation to meet the system demands. Although commonly called a “fire pump test," this is not a certification of the pump but a verification of the installed system. The pump is certified at the factory’s test facility, which is structured to meet the standards of the Hydraulic Institute for testing pump performance.

It is also useful to know about the type of driver, type of control, etc. Pictures of the nameplates of the equipment are invaluable for getting the correct information. If there is no existing nameplate, the serial number is typically metal-stamped into the upper portion of the pump discharge flange. It may require clean-up to be legible.
